That old landmark or marquee. You know the one – that one…without it everyone would not be able to say, I’ve been there! This one does that for Carolina Beach. It is one of the key signs along the Carolina Beach Boardwalk in the Central Business District that stand high and stands out.

There is this little, small-town zoo: Tregembo Zoo – Wilmington, North Carolina.
(http://www.tregemboanimalpark.com/) for over 50 years the Tregembo family has been zoo-ing it! This zoo is one of the best attractions in Wilmington. Where else can you go in Southeastern, North Carolina and feel like you had a chance to be like Dr Doolittle and travel the world to see exotic animals?

While shopping at the local Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market, I happen upon the lake’s habitants: the white crested mallard duck.

The tuft atop its head is stated to be from a mutant deformity. None-the-less, the crested duck is unique and beautiful.

I believe shells offer insight into life. They are known for such symbolisms as: life, rebirth, regeneration, love, marriage; and for some religions it is a representation of an awakening from ignorance, prosperity, or infinity because of the spiral shape in most shells.

My favorite is “Mermaid Money” or better known as a Sand Dollar.
Electrifying, eccentricities, entertainment, flare, and fun – all things Carolina Beach Boardwalk Amusement Park. Britt’s Donut Shop, Frank’s Pizza, the sweet shops, shaved ice, bicycles, bars, rides, and fun! It all begins each May and runs through September each year.

Local retail thrives on this tourist season. Local residence have a love/hate relationship with the summer season and the wave of tourists who come and go during this time.

Walking on a warm summer day – the sand in your toes, the warmth of the Atlantic waves and the squawk of the seagulls, on the North End of Carolina Beach – you seem dreamy and one with the ocean. Kids are playing, teenagers are sunbathing, and adults are often shore fishing. The waves push treasures of shells and offerings of nature up on the shore.

One of nature’s sacrifices are the “Many Mouths Hunter (Stomolophus meleagris),” Cabbagehead or Cannonball jellyfish. They feed on zooplankton, and are food for the endangered Leatherback Turtles that inhabit the Southern Atlantic waters. The are strong swimmers. Along the North End local beach goers will “play” with the jellies by poking, picking them up and tossing them back into the waves. They ooze a goo secretion of sorts, however, the Cannonball will not harm or sting humans. Tourist will wonder with curiosity and caution. June and July are months that guarantee these shoreline findings.

Sunrise, high-noon, mid-day, sunset or moonlight – Carolina Beach Pier endures the ongoing forces of the almighty ocean, offering an eccentricity and electricity of life near sand and sea.

The Carolina Beach Pier is located at 1800 Carolina Beach Avenue North, cross street is Canal Drive, in Carolina Beach. The pier is 700 feet long and offers locals and tourist sanctuary to fish, eat at the grill, enjoy adult beverages at the bar on the top floor of the “pier house,” and most importantly – she is home to the North End.

During the winter months, she is strong and quiet. The ocean waters cool and storms thrash the shores. She comes alive from March to October each year hosting people who flock to walk, fish, socialize and sunbathe. No matter the season, her strength and perseverance from weathering the weight of people and nature give her long lasting structure character and beauty. She succumbs daily to the toils and folklore of her existence.

For me…I find myself attracted to her, full of desire and unconditional love ready to discover her seasonal treasures and imagery.
I often ride my bike up to the marina or beach with my camera in my basket – seeking to find and shoot the “photo of the day.” Depending on the time of day, I will often find the pelicans patiently awaiting the charter fisherman’s cuttings to be tossed or the commercial fisherman’s scraps from the catch of the day.

Where I live the Brown Pelican will perch upon the pilon for a better view or to rest their wings before heading to one of the barriers islands for their nights sleep.

The Brown Pelican lives in a colonies. Soaring through the skies in a v-formation, the Pelican will search the waters for fish. They will dive bomb to achieve the catch and store in their pouch. The most beautiful sight is to watch in awe a colony of Pelicans flight along the shoreline as they swoop up and down, teasing the waterline with their force.
